Celebrate Gandhi’s 150th birthday with solar. (May 08, 2019)

Together we can create a record to celebrate Gandhi's 150th birthday. On 2 October 2019, it is hoped one million students will take part in a global initiative to create solar light. And we thought our schools might like to take part.

The initiative is run by Solar Urja through Localization for Sustainability (SoULS) which was set up to promote programmes where local people can be trained to own, manage and operate solar enterprises. They are planning to run a Student Solar Ambassador Workshop, on Ghandi's birthday, 2 October, where more than 1 million students will receive hands-on training to create a solar-powered light.

The date was chosen to mark one of Gandhi's guiding principles: “not mass production but production by the masses.” SoULS' ambition for this initiative aligns with this and with the United Nations' sustainable development goals on energy justice and sustainability.

So to take part you just need to register and check out the information provided. Details are below.

The Student Solar Ambassador Workshop provides students with knowledge about adapting to a changing global energy landscape and heightens their awareness about off-grid solar solutions for reliable energy. Around the world students will participate simultaneously in the workshop and stand together to take an oath for non-violence against the environment. Last year over 130 thousand students in India took part in the first Student Solar Ambassador Workshop, setting the precedent for this year’s global movement.

You can find a short video here about last year’s event and see how this movement got started: http://www.ggsy.in/SSA_Video.mp4

Check out information about the event on the SoULS website: https://www.ggsy.in/ and please contact Sarah Finder (sarah@solarforschools.co.uk) to get further information about registering.
